Responsibility and renaturation
Intact peatlands are strictly protected and have not been drained or used for peat extraction in Germany since the early 1980s. For this purpose, without exception, the areas that were drained decades ago and then used for agriculture in the form of cattle pastures or arable land are available. Mining permits are also issued for these drained areas only after careful examination by the authorities. After the end of peat extraction, the peat areas are not left fallow, but waterlogged again. The aim of this rewetting is a renaturation of the areas, which thus regain their original vegetation and can develop into moors again. The already rewetted areas are constantly monitored and maintained by the peat works, so that a typical moor flora and fauna can settle successfully. Sphagnum, cottongrasses and other plants typical of raised bogs thrive and animals worthy of protection quickly find a new home that they did not necessarily have previously on the agricultural land.

Gardener's tip for potting soil
Potting and repotting with peat-reduced potting soil: To avoid waterlogging, cover the drain hole of the vessel with a potsherd and, depending on the size of the pot, add a 3-6 cm thick layer of drainage material over it, e.g. Floragard clay granules. Pour a first layer of Floragard potting soil on top. After repotting, the plants should not be much deeper than before in the pot. Carefully remove the plant from the old vessel. If possible, loosen the root ball and cut out diseased or dead plant parts. If the root ball is dry, it should be watered. Now insert the plant into the new container and fill with Floragard potting soil from all sides and press on. A watering rim is advantageous – depending on the pot size 1-2 cm. Water the soil after potting or repotting and keep evenly moist in the following time.

Potting soil & potting soil for plants in the garden: When planting solitary shrubs or shrubs, the planting hole should be dug at least twice the size of the root ball. Important is a deep loosening of the soil, e.g. with a digging fork. The excavated soil should be mixed 1:1 with the Floragard potting soil and placed in the planting hole. After the planting process, the planting material should not be much deeper in the soil than before in order to avoid rot at the root neck. In the case of large root balls, it is advantageous if the soil filled into the planting hole forms a slight mound before inserting the bale so that a good soil closure can be ensured. After aligning the plant, fill laterally, step up easily and form a small wall around the plant with excess soil material – this prevents the irrigation water from flowing away during the growth period and ensures sufficient slurry of the planting material. Dry root balls should be sufficiently watered before planting.
