Watering is where most plant care goes wrong. Not through neglect, particularly, but through misplaced consistency. Watering every plant on the same schedule regardless of type, season, or soil moisture is perhaps the most common gardening mistake - and overwatering is significantly more damaging to most plants than mild underwatering.
Reading What Your Plant Is Telling You
Before establishing any routine, learn to read the signs:

The simplest and most reliable method for checking soil moisture is to push a finger into the soil to the second knuckle. If it feels dry at that depth, most plants need water. If it still feels damp, most can wait.
Watering by Plant Type
- Houseplants (tropical varieties - monsteras, pothos, peace lilies): Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Allow excess water to drain fully from the pot - never let pots sit in standing water for more than an hour or two. In winter, reduce frequency; most tropical houseplants slow down considerably and need much less water than during summer.
- Succulents and cacti: Water deeply but infrequently. During the growing season (spring and summer), water when the soil is completely dry, then water generously and let it drain fully. In winter, most succulents need very little water at all - perhaps once a month or even less, depending on the humidity of the zone they're kept in.
- Garden flowers and perennials: Water at the base rather than overhead, particularly for plants prone to leaf fungal issues. Established perennials are generally more drought-tolerant than annuals and often manage well with deep watering once or twice a week during dry periods, rather than shallow daily watering, which encourages surface roots and reduces drought resilience over time.
- Outdoor plants and shrubs in the Cyprus climate: The warm, dry summer months in Cyprus put particular pressure on garden plants. Deep, infrequent watering - rather than light daily sprinkling - encourages roots to grow deeper, which builds genuine drought tolerance. Early morning is the best time to water outdoor plants; it minimises evaporation and allows foliage to dry before the cooler night hours, reducing the conditions that favour fungal disease.
- Vegetables: Consistent moisture is important for most vegetables, particularly fruiting crops. Irregular watering - periods of dry followed by heavy watering - contributes to problems like blossom end rot in tomatoes and splitting in root vegetables. A regular schedule adjusted to conditions, rather than a fixed day-count routine, works better in practice.
- Trees: Newly planted trees need consistent watering through their first two growing seasons while the root system establishes. Once established, most trees manage well on natural rainfall in temperate zones. In Cyprus, young trees planted in spring should be watered every few days during summer, gradually decreasing as roots extend and deepen.
Humidity, Pots, and the Conditions That Affect Plant Care
Soil, fertilizer, and water interact with the wider environment in which a plant lives. Two factors often get less attention than they deserve: humidity and container choice.
Humidity for Houseplants
Many popular tropical houseplants - ferns, calatheas, orchids, and similar species - naturally come from humid environments where moisture in the air matters almost as much as moisture in the soil. Indoor environments, particularly in winter, tend to be considerably drier than these plants prefer.
Grouping plants together helps; they create a slightly more humid microclimate around each other. Placing pots on a tray filled with pebbles and water (with the pot sitting above the waterline, not in it) increases humidity around the base of the plant without affecting soil drainage. Misting is a common suggestion, though its effect is genuinely quite brief - perhaps more useful as a way of rinsing dust from leaves than as a reliable humidity method.
Pot Size and Material
Container size affects watering frequency significantly. A plant in a pot much larger than its root ball will have a large volume of soil remaining wet between waterings, creating overwatering conditions even when the surface appears dry. Generally, moving up one pot size at a time when repotting avoids this.
Terracotta pots allow moisture to evaporate through the sides, drying out faster than glazed ceramic or plastic. That makes them ideal for succulents, cacti, and plants that prefer dry conditions between waterings, but less suitable for moisture-loving plants that need consistent soil moisture.
Pests and Plant Care: What Healthy Growing Conditions Prevent
Healthy plants growing in appropriate soil, fed correctly, and watered consistently are genuinely more resistant to pest damage than stressed ones. It's worth saying clearly: a lot of pest problems - particularly in houseplants - are secondary to a root care issue. A plant weakened by overwatering, nutrient deficiency, or poor light is far more susceptible to spider mites, fungus gnats, and scale insects than one growing in good conditions.
That said, even well-cared-for plants encounter pests, particularly in outdoor gardens where insects and other organisms are part of the environment. Regular inspection - turning leaves over to check undersides, looking at the base of stems, watching for unusual spotting or distortion in new growth - catches problems early when they're much easier to manage.
For indoor plants, isolating any new addition for a week or two before placing it near established plants is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent spreading pests you didn't know were present.
